Hua Hin to Pattaya: around the Gulf by road

Hua Hin and Pattaya face each other across the Gulf of Thailand, but there is no road across the water, so the drive loops around the top through the Bangkok area. The car takes Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) and Rama 2 Road (Highway 35), joins the outer ring road on the southern side of Bangkok, then follows Motorway 7 or Motorway 9 east to Chonburi.

From Chonburi, the driver continues south on Motorway 7 or Sukhumvit Road (Highway 3) to Pattaya, around 370 km in total. The motorways are fast and well kept; most of the time goes on passing the edge of Bangkok, which the driver times to avoid the worst traffic. The final approach follows Sukhumvit Road or the motorway exit, depending on your hotel.

When to set off for Pattaya

A departure around 8 or 9 am, after the Bangkok rush has eased, usually puts you in Pattaya by early afternoon. Avoid Friday afternoons, when traffic into Bangkok and out towards the eastern seaboard builds at the same time. Your driver will message you on the morning of travel.

On a long day in the car, a short break halfway helps. Service areas along Motorway 7 have coffee, restrooms and food, and one such stop is included in the trip. Planned sightseeing stops are +500 THB each. The driver can suggest the best point for a break depending on the time of day and how you feel.

Comfort for a longer drive

Four to five hours is a long ride, so the car matters. The Comfort car, SUV or MPV give more legroom than a Sedan, and the Luxury MPV with reclining seats is the most restful choice. The Van carries up to ten passengers, useful for families travelling together.

Child seats are available on request (+300 THB), and the larger cars have room for golf bags and full-size luggage. Your driver keeps a steady pace on the motorway and updates you on the arrival time. With older passengers or young children, more frequent short breaks are no problem; tell us your needs when you book and we plan the timing.

Ferry, bus or private car

A passenger ferry between Hua Hin and Pattaya has run in some seasons, but its schedule has changed over the years, it can be cancelled in bad weather, and it may not operate on your travel date. Check its current status directly with the operator before planning around it. Buses between the two cities often need a change in Bangkok.

A private car leaves from your door at the time you choose and arrives at your hotel without changes. With luggage or children it is usually the simplest way to make the trip: one booking, no risk of missing a connection in Bangkok, and a fixed price confirmed when you book.

Stops worth making on the way

The route passes close to the Maeklong Railway Market in Samut Songkhram and, further on, Bang Saen beach near Chonburi, a seaside spot well loved by Thai families. Both make a good break on a long drive. The railway market is busiest when the train passes, a few times a day, so check the timing in advance. Bang Saen has a long beach, seafood stalls and a promenade.

Each stop is +500 THB, and the driver waits with your bags safely in the car. Tell us your plans when you book and we will fit them in without getting you to Pattaya too late. The driver can also suggest a simple local lunch stop near Chonburi with clean restrooms. We confirm the full plan and timing before the day of travel.
