Hua Hin to Koh Samet by private car means a drive of about 420 km to Ban Phe pier in Rayong, usually 5 to 6 hours. Hua Hin to Koh Samet: the drive to Ban Phe

Koh Samet sits off the Rayong coast, and the gateway is the pier town of Ban Phe. From Hua Hin the car heads north on Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) and Rama 2 Road (Highway 35), skirts Bangkok on the outer ring road, then runs east on Motorway 7 towards Chonburi and Rayong. Near Rayong the road passes fruit stalls and seafood shops.

After the motorway, the driver follows Highway 36 and Highway 3 along the coast to Ban Phe, about 420 km in all. Several ferry and speedboat operators run from different jetties in Ban Phe, so the driver stops in front of the one you name. Some piers have their own car park, and the driver can pull up at the entrance closest to the ticket office.

Timing the car with the boat

Boats to Koh Samet run through the day, but the last regular crossings leave in the late afternoon or early evening, and times shift with the season and the weather. We cannot confirm ferry times or prices, so check with your island hotel or the boat operator before choosing a pickup time; the hotel can usually advise on the best crossing too.

As a guide, leaving Hua Hin at 7 or 8 am usually puts you in Ban Phe around lunchtime, with several crossings still to choose from. A rest stop at a motorway service area is part of the trip. We confirm the plan with you the evening before, and your driver messages you on the morning of travel.

  • Leave Hua Hin early morning
  • Check the last boat time with your island hotel

Luggage, children and a long day

It is a long day, so choose a car you will be comfortable in. The Comfort car, SUV and MPV give more legroom than the Sedan, and the Luxury MPV with reclining seats is the most relaxing option. The Van carries up to ten passengers with bags.

Child seats are available on request (+300 THB). Pack a small, easy-to-carry bag for the boat: many island beaches have no jetty, and you may step off into shallow water. The driver helps you to the ticket counter with the rest. Travelling with older passengers or young children? Extra short breaks are no problem. Tell us when you book and we will plan the stops and timing around them.

Bus and minivan alternatives

By public transport, Hua Hin to Ban Phe usually means a bus or minivan to Bangkok, then a second bus or minivan to Rayong and Ban Phe. It can be done in a day, but the changes are tiring with luggage and the connection to the boat can be tight. At busy times bus tickets also need to be bought in advance.

A private car cuts out the waiting and the changes and drops you at the pier with time to buy your boat ticket. The trip from Hua Hin to Koh Samet becomes one drive and a short sea crossing. For a family or a group of friends, sharing one car can bring the cost close to several bus tickets. The fixed price for the car is confirmed when you book.

Breaking up the drive east

On a route this long, a stop can make the day easier. Bang Saen beach near Chonburi, with its long promenade and simple seafood stalls, is close to the route, and there are seafood restaurants near Ban Phe if you arrive early for the boat. Rayong is also known for its fruit orchards, and in season the driver can pull in at a roadside stall for durian, rambutan or mangosteen.

Each extra stop is +500 THB. Tell us the boat you are aiming for and we will check whether a stop fits; if it does not, the motorway rest stop still gives you a break halfway. Short on time? The driver can suggest a quick lunch near the pier. We confirm the final plan before the day of travel, built around the crossing you have chosen.
