Driving west to Hua Hin
From Trat the car follows Highway 3 to Chanthaburi and Highway 344 towards Chonburi, then Motorway 7 towards Bangkok. It bypasses the city on the outer ring road and joins Rama 2 Road (Highway 35) and Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) for the final stretch to Hua Hin. Through Trat and Chanthaburi the road is quiet and lined with fruit orchards.
On a morning ferry, expect to reach Hua Hin in the evening. The stretch around Bangkok is the one to time carefully, so the driver may suggest a meal in Chanthaburi or Chonburi to let the evening rush ease before crossing the ring road. Your driver keeps you updated on the expected arrival time.

The usual public route from Koh Chang to Hua Hin is a ferry, a songthaew to Trat, a bus to Bangkok and another bus or minivan to Hua Hin. You can fly from Trat to Bangkok, but you would still need a road transfer of around three hours from the airport to Hua Hin, and every leg needs its own booking.
A private car joins all of this into one trip from the pier, or from your island hotel with the car ferry. It is a long day either way, but with no changes and a car to yourself it is far easier to manage. For a family or group, sharing one car can bring the cost close to several bus tickets.
